volunteer work at yck grassroots club today. its my first day and its actually part of interact's scheme. basically, scheme is called "foster parenting", rest assured we do not foster childeren, we just have the responsibility of taking care of them while their parents attend a talk at the club, erh..well in this case we play with them. these children actually come from broken families and their foster families will change from time to time, which is rather sad, i don't understand why they have to change families. Its so Kingshaw, tho he dosent really change families( ppl taking p.lit shld know what i mean) and look what happened to him??! all his self-esteem, confidence, security, etc...gone!
anw, i was a lil' apprehensive at first, wondering what will happen if i say something wrong to them...or are the children difficult to handle, yup that sort of stuff.. haha but it all turned out well.
im not sure if im oversensitive or what, but i cld feel this sense of insecurity in them. yes, they play, scream, shout like other children do..but there's something different.they like to hold your hands, hug you, drape their hands over ur shoulder, make sure you are around at all times. one can actually see lots of this interaction in the room esp between a female volunteer and a little girl. for the 5hr long session, i wld always hold on to their hands, place my hands over their tiny shoulders, yah i really wanted them to feel secure as this monthly 5hr session might be the only time where they get to feel so. which i hope is not the case( the foster parents came for talks on foster parenting!!!!)
ok, i dunnoe if i am oversensitive again.while we drew on the majong paper, many or some of them instictively drew hearts.red heart, pink heart, yellow heart, blue heart, orange heart...a girl probably 7 years old drew a yellow heart carefully on the paper and then on top of the heart she wrote the words " i love you"...hmm..n once they have drawn, the children wld run all around agn...like nothing happened.
maybe im seeing too much into things .
